Fulfilling a schedule is a must for keeping a blog
Last weekend was the first big winter storm of the season and the worst yet since my move to Virginia three years ago. The days before involved preparation over anticipation of what could happen. Would we loose our electricity? Would the water pump freeze up? My parents and I couldn’t really do much except wait and see if things got as bad as some people imagined.
Thankfully, the weather wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been. It’s cold; the snow and ice will keep me from going anywhere for a few days; but I am able to enjoy the same comforts I normally do, from taking a hot bath to savoring several cups of tea throughout the day.
The only inconvenience endured was the cancellation of the Sunday worship service at my local church. The weather made the roads inaccessible for almost everyone, and any length of travel became hazardous. As a result, the pastor sent out a prerecorded worship service with a timely sermon on Jesus’ calming of the storm on the Sea of Galilee.
But even through the disruption of what we refer to as the Lord’s day, because of winter weather, I have a few more days to regather and refocus a plan for the future of my blog. The plan is for the blog to continue to be an integral part of davidjosephriley.com.
One takeaway from the literature about how to maintain an online presence is consistency. Therefore, Tuesday at 10:30 is the set time for new blog posts, excluding holidays. For example, New Year’s Eve fell on Tuesday, and there was no blog post on that day. Furthermore, the month of May will be a month off and will hopefully avail me more time to enjoy the warmth.
An important part of my blog are book reviews and updates on my artwork. Literature is communication, and in attentively reading and grasping a good book, dialogue happens.I have found that being able to condense and explain a book to another in my own words turns my mind into a secure storage place, and content is there for ready-recall whenever I need it.
Another key aspect to my blog is my artwork. It has been a lifelong struggle where fatigue provides a simple excuse for not doing something, specifically creative work; I have been able to overcome that which prevents me through learning discipline, but providing interval updates on my artwork gives me even more incentive to pursuing excellence.
For content, every other month will switch between a book review and an artwork update. For a heads up, the book for the month of February is George Marsden’s, Twilight of the American Enlightenment. As for the remainder of the blog content, articles will vary from personal narratives to subjects of contemporary importance. Art, history, and faith are amongst the topics that will be considered. Thank you for taking the time to read, especially, this post.
